At present, 130 waste containers are at a hub owned by Hayleys Plc at a free trade zone in Katunayake, while 111 waste containers are at the Colombo Port. These containers had been imported from UK.
The Centre for Environmental Justice (CEJ) had filed the petition against the importation of waste containers naming the Customs Director-General, Central Envrionment Authority, Hayleys Plc, and the Attorney General as respondents.
The petitioner, citing environmental concerns, had sought a court order instructing legal action against the company which had illegally imported waste from UK.
The petition is due to be taken up again on September 20.
