How the govt. postponed the cooperatives election Featured

The government is said to have indefinitely postponed the Western Province Cooperatives Director Board elections, it is reported.

The Western Province Mayor A.J.M. Muzammil is said to have delayed the election indefinitely on the directives of the President.

With the Cooperatives Director Board term ending, the Mayor had scheduled the dates for the election and had announced it through the Cooperatives Commissioner, but suddenly took the decision to cancel it.

It is said that former Deputy Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna had pointed out to the President that if the election is held his party would definitely lose and the decision to postpone it was taken based on this advice.

It is also reported that once the term has ended, there are plans to appoint the SLFP electoral organisers to the chairmen posts of these cooperative societies.

Meanwhile, it is alleged that the President had mediated in appointing Gampaha District Organiser Ajith Manapperuma as the Chairman of the Western Province Road Development Authority.

The cooperative society members claim that Manapperuma has many allegations against him.

There is also controversy over the appointment of the Katana SLFP Organiser Lalith Wanigaratne’s son Nuwan as the Chairman of the Western Province Transport Authority.

He too had held this post previously and had faced allegations of having taken bribes from bus owners.
