Appeal Court postpones hearing of FR against death penalty until tomorrow

The fundamental rights petition filed at the Appeal Court against the decision to implement the death penalty has been postponed until tomorrow (Jul 4).

This was announced by a five-member judge bench comprising Justices Yasantha Kodagoda, Arjuna Obeyesekere, Deepali Wijesundera, Janak de Silva, and Achala Wengappuli.

During today's hearing, the petitioner's attorney informed court that his client wishes to challenge only the Prisons Commissioner General's decision to implement the death penalty and not the President's decision in that regard.

Malinda Seneviratne, a journalist, had filed the petition seeking an interim order to suspend the implementation of the death penalty. The Prisons Commissioner and the Welikada Prisons Superintendent have been named as respondents to the petition.

The petitioner argued that the implementation of this punishment was a violation of human rights.
