The 18th and 19th Amendments should be abolished – President (video) Featured

If the country is to benefit, the 18th and 19th Amendments should be abolished, said President Maithripala Sirisena.

“In my view the point where we went wrong was the 19thAmendment. If the 19th Amendment had not been brought this government would have been a very good government. There is an allegation by the public that the Prime Minister and I are pulling in two opposite directions. But, this situation where we are pulling in opposite directions came about through the 19th Amendment. Mahinda Rajapaksa’s 18th Amendment was a monarchical system. That was entirely a dictatorial rule. The problem here is not regarding any particular person, but the issue is in the Constitution. The day the 18th and 19thAmendments are abolished, then the country can witness a rule that they can be happy about. Then there will be good results,” President Sirisena said.

He was speaking at the 40th Anniversary event of the National Housing Authority held at the BMICH yesterday (23).

Further expressing his views at the event, Presidenty Sirisena said, “There is just a few more months for the elections. We must look back over the four years and see where we went wrong.”
