Historical decision made by Supreme Court today Featured

The Supreme Court today (18 April) stated that the Sri Lankan government has violated the rights of individuals with special needs as it has failed to provide necessary facilities for them to access government institutions.

The Supreme Court trial at bar issued this order today, considering a petition submitted by Dr. Ajith C Perera.

The Court ordered all institutions including ministries to act in accordance with the regulation passed in 2006 with this regard and to take action to provide special access to persons with special needs.

The court also pointed out that it is possible to file legal action against the institutions at magistrate’s court over failure to comply with these regulations.

Furthermore, the Supreme Court ordered the government to pay an amount of Rs. 50,000 to the petitioner Dr. Ajith Perera as court charges.
