“The TNA definitely must nominated a candidate to represent the Tamil people,” pointing out that the UNP could prevent losing the Tamil votes in this manner.
He said if not it would seem like the UNP would betray their own party.
Ranatunge said this to the media at the BIA upon the arrival of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa from the US recently.
Political analysts note that a decisive factor in Maithripala Sirisena’s victory in 2015 was the Tamil and Muslim votes.
However, the TNA refrained from responding to the invitation of Presannna Ranatunge. But MP Mawei Senadhiraja had told ‘Gagana’ radio that once the date is fixed for the Presidential election, the party would meet and decide.
Meanwhile, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had been served papers regarding two cases filed against him in the US by Lasantha Wickremetunge’s daughter and Roy Samadanam, a torture victim.
Prasanna Ranatunge, an ardent Rajapaksa supporter, expressed belief that Gotabhaya Rajapaksa would contest the Presidential election with the blessings of his brother Mahinda Rajapaksa.
