Don't like to see monks appearing before courts - Thalatha

Minister of Justice and Prison Reforms Thalatha Athukorala says that she doesn’t like to see Buddhist monks appearing before the courts.

She also stated that she does not want to produce monks before the courts under any criminal law at any circumstances.

She was speaking at the opening of four-storeyed Shrine at Ratnapura Bodhirajaramaya. Awarding scrolls to the Chief incumbent Ven. Mawela Sumana Thera of Ratnapura Sri Bodhirajarama Viharaya who was elevated district chief monk position.

Speaking further Minister, Thalatha Athukorala said,

"We are committed for the protection of Buddhist doctrine. We should not divide on the line of chapters. Our sect is Buddhist sect. There are monks who perform a great service silently. We need to live according to five percepts preached by the Buddha.

"I must say that I am not happy about forming a separate court for monks and even I don’t like to see Buddhist clergy going before the court." She said.
