The third reading of the budget is scheduled to be held in Parliament on Friday (5) and on the second reading of the budget, the SLFP members abstained from voting on instructions of the President. The act was severely criticized by opposition leader Mahinda Rajapakse.
The President summoned the SLFP MPs at 7.00 pm to the President's House on the 31st to discuss the measures to be taken at the budget vote.
Asked about this, Secretary General of the SLFP Parliamentarian Dayasiri Jayasekara stated that voting in favor of the budget or abstain the voting will be decided after the discussion.
They will also discuss about the new alliance to be formed with the SLPP.
A SLFP senior politician said that the serious verbal attack from UNP backbenchers in parliament, danger of falling through of discussions between the SLFP and SLPP will have implication on the final vote.
However, according to the composition of the parliament, with the 6 SLFPers, there are 106 MPs in the UNP, and with 6 MPs from JVP , the opposition has only 104 members. The UNP government received the support of the Ceylon Workers Congress and the TNA for the budget in the second reading.
