Elders’ and children's homes lacking newcomers

Commissioner of Social Services, Probation and Childcare of the Southern Province Mahesh Karunanayake says that there is a drop in the number of members in elders’ and children's homes.

At present, there are 29 children's homes in the Southern Province and 856 kids are accommodated there. 1562 kids were in children’s homes in 2016, the number has been slashed to half by now.

There are forty-nine elders’ homes and they accommodate 1,200 elders. In the recent past, most of the children got married legally and vocational training was also given to them, he said.
