Tourists without visa to be fined Featured

Sri Lankan government has decided to impose a fine of US$ 500 on the foreign nationals who remain in the country without a valid visa.

In parallel the government has also decided to extend the tourist visa period and the visa issued for business purposes will facilitate multiple entries.

In order to implement these decisions the 1948 No. 20 Immigrants and Emigrants Act has to be amended and the cabinet paper presented by Mr. Vajira Abeywardena, the Minister of Internal & Home Affairs and Provincial Councils & Local Government, has been approved by the cabinet.

Previously cabinet approval was granted to amend the immigration and emigration laws in order to amend the visa fees and types of visa with regard to the issuance of visa by the Department of Immigration and Emigration.

Through these amendments measures can be taken to introduce a visa process that encourages investments and a common visa fee instead of the mechanism where different fees are applied to different countries, said Mr. Vajira Abeywardena.
