When Sri Lanka Mirror contacted one of Basil Rajapaksa’s advisors regarding this situation, he said the essence of Basil Rajapaksa’s statement has been ignored and and certain statements are being made with the aim of creating internal clashes.
He further noted, “Basil Rajapaksa’s statement was that defeating the UNP at this point was not such a difficult task. He said that the SLPP was developing as a strong party and that joining with the SLFP should be with the aim of creating a broader coalition for the purpose of developing the country and not for the mere instant ploy to defeat the UNP.
Currently, there are many parties that have come under the SLPP. What Basil Rajapaksa implied was that it was the true opposition Mahinda faction that had the primary responsibility of defeating the UNP and had the trust of the people since 2015. What Basil Rajapaksa meant by strengthening the SLPP was strengthening the Mahinda force.
Basil truly believes that the only way to defeat the UNP is by strengthening the SLPP.
However, some small parties are trying to create an anti-Basil front which is detrimental to the main cause of defeating the UNP.”
