Agreement between minister, fmr. Customs DG!  Featured

The Finance Minister and the former Customs Director General P.M.S. Charles had met on February 2nd and the two have had a cordial dialog, a Finance Ministry official told the Sri Lanka Mirror.

It was discussed during the discussions that certain customs officers are trying to cover up huge frauds that had taken place at the Customs and the minister had assured that he would immediately investigate the matter and take stern action against those involved in such illegal activities.

Ministar Samaraweera had assured the Customs DG that he would not allow any unfair treatment towards her and requested Mrs Charles to report to work at  the ministry tomorrow morning and she would be entrusted with a host of special responsibilities, the Finance Ministry Spokesman further added.

However, the Customs Unions Collective Co-Secretary Sudath de Silva told the media yesterday (03) that they would continue the strike action until Mrs. P.M.S. Charles is reinstated in the post of Customs Director General. They said the DG was removed from her post due to  pressure from racketeers without any acceptable cause shown for her removal.

Charles did not bow down to political pressure:

Mrs. Charles has been in the state administrative service for the past 28 years and is a Sri Lanka Administrative Service Special Grade Officer.

She had rendered a great service to the country having served as the Vavuniya District Secretary, Additional DS, Assistant DS and Batticaloa DS despite numerous challenges. In fact, she even faced death threats from politicians such as Karuna Amman and Pilleyan.

She is a graduate from the Jaffna University and earned her post graduate degrees from the Peradeniya and Rajarata universities.

The Cabinet had appointed Mrs. Charles as the Customs DG on the recommendations of Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera.
