SLPP under pressure to give candidacy to Sirisena Featured

Opposition leader Mahinda Rajapaksa and the SLPP should unconditionally support incumbent Maithripala Sirisena’s candidacy at the next presidential election, says SLFP national organizer Duminda Dissanayake.

Speaking to ‘Divaina Irida’, Dissanayake insisted that Sirisena should be the only candidate of the SLFP-led UPFA.

The SLPP has no ethical right to oppose him, he said, noting that president Sirisena protected Rajapaksa by appointing him as the prime minister, then as the opposition leader and also did not take action against his parliamentary seat after he obtained the SLPP membership.

Meanwhile, SLFP spokesman Mahinda Samarasinghe has told ‘Anidda’ that there would be no alliance with the SLPP if that party did not give an assurance that Sirisena would be the presidential candidate.

The SLPP stand

These calls are being made amidst reports of a secret mission by the SLPP leadership not to give the candidacy to Sirisena.

There has been speculation in political circles that he had removed Ranil Wickremesinghe and appointed Rajapaksa in the premiership following a guarantee that he would be given the candidacy.
