Kawashima machine from Japan to resolve garbage issue

A carbonic fertilizer project has been initiated in the Galle, Vakunugoda area by the Ministry of Home Affairs and Provincial Councils and Local Government as a permanent solution to the garbage crisis in Galle.

The Kawashima compost machine has been donated by Japan to turn the Galle garbage into compost. The machine is said to cost around Rs. 200 million.

Expressing his views the Home Affairs and Provincial Councils and Local Government Minister Vajira Abeywardena said this machine could turn around 50 tons of garbage into carbonic fertilizer per day.

“The garbage issue is a big problem in Galle and daily around 30 tons of garbage is collected. This garbage has been piling up for years and Japan has given us this machine which could resolve this garbage issue. With the Kawashima machine, the garbage problem can be solved and even the garbage from other areas could be recycled and turned into compost by this machine. The degradable garbage would be turned into fertilizer while the non-degradable garbage would be recycled. We hope to resolve the garbage issue in Galle very soon with this machine,” he said.

The minister made these comments during his inspection tour at the setting up of this machine at the Vakunugoda area.
