Naming road after Dharmadasa Walpola suspended Featured

A group of residents has objected to the naming of part of the Waragoda Road in Kelaniya in honour of the late singer Dharmadasa Walpola.

The stretch between Rani Dissanayake Mawatha and Nungomugoda Junction was to be named after him on January 12.

However, it had to be suspended after the group filed an objection with the Pradeshiya Sabha, says PS chairperson Shanthi Kumuduni.

According to her, the naming of the road was to be done by a certain Foundation.

Previously, the Kelaniya PS cut down a temple tree on which was based the late singer’s ‘Araliya Athu Aga Rengum Panawa’ song.

The more than 100-year-old temple tree was located on the other side of the road in front of Walpola’s home at Kelaniya.

It was cut down when Saparamadu Place was concreted.

Meanwhile, reports reaching Sri Lanka Mirror say the name board of a road in Kelaniya named after comedian Samuel Rodrigo has gone missing.
