Minister Samaraweera had proposed seeking $ 1,000 million from the National Savings Bank (NSB) to fulfill the debt servicing needs for 2019. This caused a big commotion at the Cabinet meeting.
Minister Karunanayake had said that the people’s savings should not be used to settle the country’s debt burden requirements.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe together with Malik Samarawickrama and Lakshman Kiriella had supported the proposal made by Minister Mangala Samaraweera, noting that his Cabinet paper should definitely be approved.
They had told Ravi Karunanayake to propose an alternative if he opposes their move.
An uproar had taken place amid the disagreement and Ravi Karunanayake had asked that if the Cabinet paper is approved, his objection to it should be noted.
Thereafter, Karunanayake’s objections had been noted and the said Cabinet paper had been approved.
