A new constitution in 2019 Featured

Minister Lakshman Kiriella says a new constitution will be introduced next year.

In the meantime, TNA MP M.A. Sumanthiran believes a draft constitution can be submitted to parliament before February 04.

Speaking to the media in Jaffna on December 29, he said the UNP and the JVP would support the draft constitution.

He also said that despite invitations since August 2015 , the TNA did not join the government as it wanted a solution to the national question first.

Sumanthiran said that together with the JVP, an interim report on the constitution was moved by them.

Only the MEP opposed a clause in it, which says the northern and the eastern provinces should be merged, while the JVP said that that could be done following a referendum, he said.

The TNA MP also said that they would not oppose giving priority to Buddhism, as told by the prime minister to Maha Nayake Theras recently, but that other religions should be treated equally.

He added that the support of more than 150 MPs could be obtained for the new constitution if around 21 SLFP MPs joined the government as reported.
