Addressing party activists in Gampaha, he said the SLPP somehow wanted to make the government hold any election, noting the party could easily emerge victorious.
The UNP wants to create a public opinion in its favour before the presidential election and is threatening and trying to silence the media, which is its main hurdle, he said.
That will not be allowed to happen, Ranatunga said.
Meanwhile, UPFA MP S.B. Dissanayake says they will topple the present government and form a new one at the first available opportunity.
That will be done through a vote or else, he told the media yesterday (27).
He said that a new government could be formed by gaining a parliamentary majority too.
The present regime does not have a majority, going by the 103 votes it received for the vote of accounts, Dissanayake added.
