Chinese involved in researching ancient Mannar ports Featured

Ancient trade with the Chinese through the Mannar and the Matota ports is under research by archaeologists from the two countries.

Archaeology chief Prof. P.B. Mandawala says the research teams are from China’s Sichuan University, the Kelaniya University and the Archaeology Department.

Dr. Mangala Katugampola of the Kelaniya University, who heads the research teams, says no extensive study has so far taken place into the Matota port.

A few clay pots were found during a research by archaeologist John Carswell, he says.

Previously, Chinese archaeologists were involved in a study of ancient ports in Jaffna.

According to chief incumbent of Matota Rajamaha Vihara, Ven. Ambagahawewa Sangharakkitha Thera, Mannar had been the country’s main port during the third century BC and the reign of Anuradhapura kingdom.
