A decision on opposition leader position on Friday! Featured

The TNA says the appointment of the leader of the opposition has been put off following its objections that Mahinda Rajapaksa lost his seat after he obtained membership of the SLPP.

Its MP M.A. Sumanthiran has told BBC Sinhala Service that speaker Karu Jayasuriya has asked them to file their objections in writing.

Earlier, Jayasuriya announced that Rajapaksa would be appointed the opposition leader, with the UPFA sitting in the opposition and the UNF MPs occupying the government benches when House sittings commenced at 1.00 pm.

The speaker said that since the UPFA had the highest number of seats in the opposition, it would be given the opposition leader position.

No longer a UPFA MP

However, Sumanthiran objected, arguing that Rajapaksa was no longer a UPFA MP.

According to the TNA MP, the speaker put off taking a decision until Friday.

Attempts to contact Jayasuriya for a comment failed.

At the UPFA’s request, Mahinda Amaraweera was appointed the chief opposition whip.

Gayantha Karunatilake has been reappointed the chief government whip.
