He was responding to questions raised by journalists in the north yesterday (16) about the opposition leader position following the move by the UNF to form a government of its own.
Sampanthan noted that the position should go to a party in consideration of the composition of parliament.
He said he would never attempt to work against parliamentary traditions or democracy.
Meanwhile, MP Dinesh Gunawardena has told ‘Divaina’ that they would request speaker Karu Jayasuriya to officially recognize Mahinda Rajapaksa as the opposition leader.
The UPFA has unanimously taken a decision that the position should go to Rajapaksa, and its general secretary Mahinda Amaraweera will inform the speaker about it in writing, Gunawardena said.
The UPFA has 101 MPs, he added.
