President explains why crisis could not be resolved Featured

President Maithripala Sirisena says he could not fulfill his promise to resolve the prevailing political crisis due to the delay by the Supreme Court in delivering a judgement.

He said so at a meeting last night with UPFA and SLPP activists.

MP Vasudeva Nanayakkara said steps to resolve the political crisis was discussed there.

It was seven days yesterday (11) since president Sirisena vowed to end the crisis within seven days.

Addressing the SLFP special convention on December 04, he made it clear the crisis would continue for seven more days at most.

Judgement likely to get delayed further

However, it appears that there will be no resolution even beyond seven days.

Meanwhile, it is believed the SC will deliver its verdict tomorrow in the petitions filed against the dissolution of parliament.

Former justice ministry secretary Nihal Jayawickrama has told ‘Mawbima’ that since the matter was a complex one, it was time-consuming to make a careful study of it.

He said the verdict could be expected within the next two days, or if more time is needed, it could get delayed until next week.
