The programme organized by the Marine Environment Protection Authority was implemented by the Negombo Lions Club, while around 10,000 varieties of plants were planted.
Recently, the people living in the vicinity of the coal power plant had been facing great difficulty due to the ash and coal dust from the power plant which also caused serious environmental issues. Hence, the solution proposed by the environmentalists was to set up a natural wind breaker. Therefore, these trees were planted within the coal power station premises as a natural wind breaker.
In addition trees were planted on either side of the entrance road and prior to this instance, the Negombo Lions Club had also planted another 5000 trees.
