First Theravada stupa in Japan unveiled (Pics)

The first Theravada stupa in Japan was ceremoniously unveiled in Sawara, Katori District, Japan recently.

Under the invitation of Ven. Banagala Upatissa Thero, the Chairman of the Mahabodhi Society of Sri Lanka and the Chief Sangha Nayaka of Japan, the event was held under the auspices of Katori mayor - Seiichi Ui.

The 35-ft high stupa was erected by Sri Lankan craftsmen with the financial contribution of the Ramanayaka family.

Holy relics were ceremoniously placed within the stupa in August under the auspices of Prof. Dhammika Ganganath Dissanayake, who is the Sri Lankan ambassador to Japan.
