Moragahakanda reservoir reaches 84 pc capacity Featured

The Moragahakanda reservoir, built as the final phase of the Mahaweli project, has now reached 84 per cent of its 460,000 acre feet capacity, says public relations officer of the project P.G. Dayananda.

Speaking to the media yesterday (15), he said the Upper Elahera canal that takes water from the reservoir to Mahakanadarawa was 94 km long, out of which 26 km would be underground.

The canal will take waters to 1,547 small tanks in the Medirigiriya, Matale and Laggala areas.

Engineer-in-charge D.S. Bandara said the Moragahakanda reservoir would reach its maximum capacity in another 20 days.

Water is now being released for paddy land in the Elahera area, and spill gates will have to be opened if monsoon rains become active, he added.
