Effect of Gaja on Jaffna-(update /pics)

Due to the Cyclonic storm ‘Gaja’ strong winds and heavy rains was reported in certain areas in the Jaffna District last night (15).

According to residents, strong winds were experienced in the Delft Island and the coastal areas in Jaffna.

Heavy rains and strong gusts were experienced in the Jaffna town area as well, according to residents.

The Jaffna District Secretary Nagalingham Wethanayagam and the District Disaster Management Centre had warned the fishing communities not to venture out to sea due to the cyclonic storm.

According to Indian media, the effects of the storm had affected India badly.

Northern schools close due to Gaja

The Northern governor’s office had decided to close all schools in the Northern Province today due to the impact of cyclone Gaja which is expected to affect the Northern province.

According to the Meteorology Department, several areas in the North including Jaffna would be affected due to the cyclone. Hence, the decision was taken to close all schools in the area today. However, as the examinations are underway, the authorities had decided to suspend the examination for today due to the impending storm.
