Steps to curb pest caterpillar Featured

Agriculture minister Mahinda Amaraweera has instructed officials to release funds to curb a species of pest caterpillars found from Ampara and two other districts.

First reported from Nigeria, and later from India, this crop-devouring caterpillar is known as Fall Army Worm.

It munches its way through a hectare within 72 hours.

A female lays around 2,000 eggs in her 10-day lifespan.

As a moth, it flies about 100 kilometres a night on average.

The Ministry requests the public to immediately inform the area’s agricultural officer or to the telephone no. 1920 or 081-2388316 if these caterpillars are found in crops.
