Diabetes accounts for 7 pc of deaths Featured

Diabetes accounts for seven per cent of deaths in Sri Lanka annually, says directress of the Health Promotion Bureau, Dr. Paba Palihawadana.

She says diabetes has become a major health issue, with one out of every 12 adults having it and one out of every six youths in danger of contracting it.

Dr. Palihawadana was speaking to the media in view of world diabetes day on November 14, this year’s theme being ‘diabetes and the family.’

Diabetes is the main cause for strokes, paralysis and kidney failure, said Dr. Priyankara Jayawardena.

It can be controlled by a proper diet, weight control, quitting smoking and alcohol, regular exercises and balanced mental health, he said.
