Why UNF MPs are reluctant to join with Mahinda

SLPP founder Basil Rajapaksa has so far been unable to secure a parliamentary majority for prime minister Mahinda Rajapaksa due to a decision by the new government to dissolve parliament and go for a general election after gaining a majority, a joint opposition spokesman told Sri Lanka Mirror.

In a statement, Rajapaksa says his foremost intention is to call an election as soon as possible and obtain people’s mandate for a new programme to save the country from its present abyss.

Worth of a crossover rises to Rs. 300 m

Meanwhile, ‘Mawbima’ reports that the two main parties are trying to buy MPs, with one party raising the worth of a crossover to Rs. 300 million from Rs. 250 million.

Five UNP MPs have already extended support to Rajapaksa and accepted ministerial positions.

It was rumoured yesterday (31) that four more from the UNP were going to join the new government.
