President agrees to halt handicrafts imports Featured

Tourism state minister Ranjith Aluvihare says the president has responded positive to a written request by him to completely halt the importation of wooden carvings and handicrafts.

He said so at the opening of a handicraft village and a distribution of equipment among handicraft industrialists at Ehelagala in Sigiriya yesterday (21).

The state minister said maximum assistance would be given to develop the handicraft village.

He added that between Rs. 12 million and Rs. 20 m earned by the Central Cultural Fund from visitors to the Sigiriya are not utilized for any development of the area.

Attempts by Sri Lanka Mirror to contact the CCF for a comment failed as several of its officials were said to be overseas and some others could not be contacted.
