The discussion did not elaborate, as expected, on a proposal to form a caretaker government together with the SLFP, according to him.
Leaders of the parties in the JO and representatives of the SLFP’s group of 15 participated in the meeting.
Here, S.B. Dissanayake reported no progress in talks with president Maithripala Sirisena with regard to a caretaker government.
A discussion on the matter will take place today, with the participation of all JO MPs.
Dissanayake, along with Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Susil Premajayanth and John Seneviratne represented the group of 15 at last night’s meeting.
Wimal Weerawansas, who opposes a caretaker government, did not attend.
Earlier in the day, Mahinda Rajapaksa told journalists at Abhayaramaya in Narahenpita that they were not having big hopes for a caretaker government.
The JO will take a decision if such a proposal was made to them, he said.
At the same place, ‘Pevidi Handa’ held a media briefing, during which its president Ven. Muruttettuwe Ananda Thera commented that it would be better for the ex-president to hang himself rather than to join a caretaker government.
According to him, most in the JO are opposed to the idea, and that it could be a proposal by the group of 15.
