Basil Rajapaksa opposes caretaker govt. proposal Featured

Founder of the SLPP Basil Rajapaksa has strongly objected to a proposal to form a caretaker government together with the SLFP under president Maithripala Sirisena.

In an interview with ‘Lankadeepa’, the former minister has said that contrary to popular belief, his personal opinion was that there would be no ‘wayside rests’ in this journey.

He said he was not prepared to focus his target elsewhere.

Noting that a government change has no approval of president Sirisena, Basil Rajapaksa said he treated the president as a party to the crisis, and that it would be impossible for them to wage their fight together with him.

De Soyza has told ‘Mawbima’ that they cannot trust president Sirisena any longer, as he has broken the JO’s confidence in him on several occasions.

He has cited the following as examples – failure even after 3 3 ½ years to bring in the 20th amendment, refusal to give premiership to Mahinda Rajapaksa even if he won the 2015 general election, changing the general secretaries of the SLFP and the UPFA, failure to disband the FCID, not supporting the no-confidence motion against prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and not granting the opposition leader position to the JO despite its having a majority.

De Soyza has said that the president should prove by deed that he could be trusted, before going for a caretaker government.

The remarks by Basil Rajapaksa and de Soyza come as Mahinda Rajapaksa is due to hold a meeting at the home of SLPP chairman Prof. G.L. Peiris today (09) about the caretaker government proposal.

All MPs in the JO have been invited for the discussion.
