MR condemns diatribe against Cardinal

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, yesterday, asked whether Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera’s response to a statement attributed to Archbishop of Colombo Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith revealed the stand of the government on the issue.

Rajapaksa said Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe should make a statement on the issue, in the absence of the President, who is currently overseas and Prime Minister’s reluctance to do so implied that the statement by Samaraweera as the media Minister revealed the official position of the government.

Addressing the media, at his Wijerama Mawatha residence, Rajapaksa said he condemned the statement by Samaraweera, and many Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims too had condemned it.

It was wrong for government politician to launch into a diatribe against a prelate for what the latter is alleged to have said in a place of worship, the former President said.
