Chandrika declares open bridge amidst protest!

The bridge constructed over the Attanagalu Oya across Attanagalla, Siththammahara, Bonegala was declared open by former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge around 11.00 am today (22).

At the time of this event, a provincial councillor of the Western Province and a group of his supporters had staged a protest and hooted at the former president.

Another group had used bicycle chains on the main power lines to disable the loudspeakers by disrupting the power supply.

However, the former President had not panicked and had asked the organisers to continue the event. Ministers Faiszer Mustapha and Lasantha Alagiyawanne were also present at this ceremony.

This bridge built across the Attanagalu Oya was made possible due to the mediation of Chandrika Bandaranaike, while another group of provincial councillors from the Attanagalla Pradeshiya Sabha were trying to sabotage this event, the organisers said.

A few days prior to this event a group including Provincial Councillor Upul Mahendra Rajapaksa and the Attanagalla Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Priyantha Pushpakumara had attempted to declare open this bridge during the night.
