Blessings received for Gota to be presidential candidate - Gammanpila Featured

MP Udaya Gammanpila says his prayer is that former defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa becomes the candidate at the next presidential election and that he is happy that the ex-president has given his blessings for that.

Gammanpila was speaking to the media yesterday (12) after attending a hearing at the Supreme Court that heard a petition filed by him that challenges the 20th amendment to the constitution moved by the JVP.

He referred to a remark made by Mahinda Rajapaksa during his ongoing tour of India that he would give leadership to the SLPP at the presidential election and that if he could not contest, the candidate would definitely be one of his brothers.

What Mahinda said in India

In an interview with The Hindu, he also said he had immense trust in the SLPP, which he said, was his party.

Mahinda Rajapaksa also said he would make representations to the court that he could contest again as per provisions in the 19th amendment.

He went onto say that his eldest son Namal Rajapaksa could not be considered a candidate, as the minimum age for a candidate has been raised to 35 years.

Going by his statement, the only brother of his who has fulfilled the required qualifications is Chamal Rajapaksa.

Both Gotabhaya and Basil are dual citizenship holders, who cannot become elected members.
