Ravi back in cabinet, UNP politburo decides Featured

The UNP politburo that met today (05) agreed after a lengthy discussion to grant a cabinet portfolio to the party’s deputy leader Ravi Karunanayake, reports say.

Karunanayake told the meeting, chaired by PM Ranil Wickremesinghe that he was informed by the president that he was not opposed to his reappointment as a minister.

Politburo members Navin Dissanayake, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Ranjith Madduma Bandara, Kabir Hashim, Ruwan Wijayawardena, Harin Fernando, J.C. Alawatuwala and Ajith P. Perera participated in the discussion.

AG’s opinion next week

The attorney general’s opinion with regard to the mention of Karunanayake in the bond commission report will be announced next week.

A majority in the UNP politburo say that according to the report, Karunanayake is not directly involved in the bond matter.

Sirikotha sources say several MPs have urged Wickremesinghe to reappoint Karunanayake as a minister.

A disadvantage

It is disadvantageous to the party that he does not have a cabinet position after having played a key role in bringing the present government to power and to keep the party’s power in Colombo district, they noted.
