CID arrests person who smuggled 50,000 cigarettes

The CID has arrested a person at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayaka for smuggling in 250 cartons of cigarettes containing 50,000 cigarettes without being detected by Customs officers.

The arrest was made this morning (03) and the suspect is to be handed over to the Customs for further questioning.

The move follows talks held by the Minister of Finance and Mass Media Mangala Samaraweera with the heads of the CID and Customs to detect persons smuggling in goods such as gold and cigarettes with the aid of some Customs officers.

Accordingly, CID detectives and Customs officials in civilian clothes have been deployed at the airports and ports to arrest smugglers.

On Aug. 31, CID officers arrested an inbound Sri Lanka passenger from New Delhi who came out after Customs clearance at BIA with 20 kilos of gold stitched to his clothing
