Wildlife guides and field assistants in Polonnaruwa have refused to carry out field duties in protest against an attack on their colleagues in Minneriya national park.

President of their association M. Indika Wasantha Peiris said they want the attackers arrested and the law enforced against them.

The incident began after the arrest of a fisherman who encroached on Minneriya national park.

Thereafter, a group of fishermen had gone to the wildlife office there, attacked the officers and freed the suspect.

Peiris said it was a joke to arrest only two suspects, when the attackers numbered between 200 and 300.

In view of this incident, he said it was unsafe for them to engage in field duties and would carry out office work only.

Assistant director of wildlife W.D.M.J. Wickremasinghe said no national park in Polonnaruwa has been closed due to the incident.
