Trash S’pore won’t be brought to SL - Harsha

There is no truth to allegations levelled by Joint Opposition MP Bandula Gunawardena that by the Singapore free trade agreement the government plans to bring garbage from Singapore to Sri Lanka, said National Policy and Economic Affairs State Minister Dr. Harsha de Silva.

Addressing a media briefing held at Sirikotha UNP headquarters yesterday (22) he noted that although certain items were listed under the Singapore – Sri Lanka trade agreement, legally this cannot be done.

He pointed out that the agreement with Singapore would not go beyond Sri Lanka’s laws and regulations, adding that based on the regulations of the customs, items that are banned under Environmental and quarantine rules will not be allowed into the country.

Vital to enter into the Asian zone:

The State Minister noted that for the future of the country we need to engage with the other countries in the Asian region, adding that it should not be viewed in a political angle.

He also vehemently denied allegations that through this agreement labour from Singapore, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh would be brought into the country.
