With the 2015, 19th Amendment to the Constitution, the number of terms that a person could hold the post of President was limited to two.
However, several legal experts have notified the former President that as the Amendment was brought in after a considerable time since his Presidency, this law does not apply to the past.
The Chairman of the Sri Lanka Podu Jana Peramuna Prof. G.L. Peiris has also said that several legal experts had expressed this view.
