Deadline to accept defaced currency notes, extended

Prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has notified the Central Bank to extend the deadline to accept defaced currency notes up to 31 March 2018.

Earlier, the deadline was set as Dec. 31, 2017.

The Central Bank had even issued a statement to raise public awareness on this matter.

Willful mutilation, alteration or defacement of currency notes is an offence and is punishable by imprisonment or a fine, or both.
