Cabinet approval has been granted to develop the Eastern Container Terminal in stages as a fully operational terminal by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority.
Accordingly, international competitive bids were called for Phase II of the Eastern Container Terminal at the Port of Colombo.
The government said it had received three bids.
Accordingly, based on the recommendation of the Procurement Committee appointed by the Cabinet of Ministers, the proposal made by the Ports and Naval Services Minister to award the contract to Access Engineering and China Harbour Engineering Company was approved by the Cabinet.
India had earlier strategically bid for the Eastern Terminal with Japan, but in the face of protests, the present government has decided to hand over the Western Terminal to India instead.
