The programme also aims at stabilizing prices of locally cultivated crops.

Accordingly, the government has decided to provide a seed subsidy for 14 food crops including Peanuts, Ginger, Green gram, Urad, Chilli, Kurakkan, Big onions, Cowpea and Red onions.

Under the subsidy, seeds for 1/2 acre would be provided free of charge. And from 1/2 acre - 5 acres, the seeds would be provided at 50% the cost.

Farmers should initially get their seeds and commence farming of the crop. Then, after officials obtain necessary details, they will be entitled to the subsidy, Dr. Weerakoon says.
