‘Mahendran personally used Rs. 66.8 m of CB money’ Featured

Former Central Bank governor Arjun Mahendran had personally used Rs. 66.8 million of the bank money during his tenure, the Anti-Corruption Front is going to complain to the Anti-Corruption Committee Secretariat in a matter of days.

Mahendran and the then members of the CB’s Monetary Board, present governor Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy, incumbent members of the Monetary Board and prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will be named as respondents, said ACF convener Wasantha Samarasinghe.

He said an internal audit report of the CB revealed that Mahendran had personally used Rs. 66.8 million of the bank’s money on 163 occasions without submitting bills, including Rs. 33.4 m through credit card transactions.

Samarasinghe said there was strong suspicion as to why incumbent governor Coomarasawamy has not taken action against this fraud.
